Clouds, Rocks and Pines - The Versatility of Japanese Painting

UPDATED 20140821 11:05:13

This course will give a comprehensive survey of the many different types of Japanese painting, which will be discussed within the context of their historical, social and political background. Next to introducing Japanese painting techniques and formats, like hanging scrolls, hand scrolls, folding screens and sliding doors, each week will cover chronologically a different painting tradition and explain their typical techniques and subjects. The overview starts with ancient murals and Buddhist paintings. Furthermore the distinctive Yamato-e (Japanese pictures) style and the Tosa and Sumiyoshi painting schools will be explored. Another topic is ink monochrome painting, the art form closely associated with Zen Buddhism. The longest lived and most influential school of painting in Japanese history, the Kano school, will be examined in one session. Moreover the decorative Rinpa school, the Maruyama-Shijo school of Kyoto, the works of Literati painters and the masters of Ukiyo-e painting will explain important styles within secular painting traditions. The course will conclude with examples of modern Japanese painting, showcasing masters of Yoga (Western-style painting) and Nihonga (Japanese-style painting).
