The debt that Tiepolo paid to the art of Paolo Veronese helped him to become the greatest decorative painter in 18th-century Europe. Through a bright palette and a hint of glamorous seduction in the attitudes of the figures, both artists generated an appealing imagery populated with elegant deities and classical architecture. Examine the prolific inventiveness and creativity of Tiepolo in the light of his seminal masterpieces. Explore the reception of Veronese in 18th-century Venice and more broadly the concept of artistic emulation. The course also provides an insight on the outstanding exhibition on Tiepolo and Veronese recently held in Italy (Udine, 2013).
