Papermaking for Artists' Books and Beyond.

UPDATED 20140821 11:05:10

Papermaking is an immensely versatile process that widens creative horizons for book artists, printmakers, collage artists, textile practitioners, sculptors and interdisciplinary artists. It is in expensive and sustainable, and can be done with household equipment andrecycled paper. Learning at Morley allows students to go beyond this, as the studio is equipped with a Hollander beater to recycle rags and produce pulp with different structural and sculptural properties from plant fibres.Techniques and materials from both Western and Eastern (Japanese) traditions are used. More and more creative people are turning to handmade paper as a medium for expression as it is cheap and sustainable and needs very little basic equipment. Your tutors will guide you through all the techniques needed (Western and Eastern) to turn this humble material into your own unique works. Make paper for use in textile artworks and clothing. Work on a small scale or make large installations. Produce vessels of astonishing individuality: lightweight and ethereal or substantial and tactile. Dip armatures for stunning basketry or sculptures into pulp, coil strips into woven projects, fold stitch and weave your papers; make mobiles, create artists' books, journals and portfolios and use it for drawings and paintings. Work with layers and pulp forming, try embossing and moulding, use papier mache pulp to form shapes and work in 3D or 2D, cast pulp onto found objects, wrapspecial treasures in the finest gossamer sheets, include natural elements such as seed heads and pods to make works inspired by nature. Explore how your ownhandmade paper transforms your prints or use your individual papers to make collages. Experiment in three dimensions to produce ideas for sculptures like Anthony Caro did in the 1980s or paint with pulp like David Hockney and Chuck Close. The possibilities are endless.
