The role of a teaching assistant involves supporting a teacher with classroom responsibilities. A teaching assistant will sometimes work with a small group of pupils that need extra support with a subject such as literacy or numeracy. They spend individual time with the children listening to them read and may also work with children with special educational needs. Teaching assistants may also carry out duties like lesson preparation and helping plan outings, allowing the teacher to concentrate on teaching the class. The Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is a great stepping stone to higher education, such as a foundation degree or higher level Teaching Assistant training.
