This course will focus both on American history over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and international and British history since 1945. From the international perspective, the course will focus on the controversial issue of the USA's role in the world and on her attempts to contain communism during the Cold War after 1945. Students will study the USA's role in Korea and Vietnam in the AS year, with a wider study of the Cold War in the A2 year. A key theme of the course will be an examination of whether the USA's claims as a champion of democracy were matched by events at home and therefore the course will cover the Civil Rights era in the AS year. Students will gain a longer term perspective of US history in the A2 year with a study of issues such as westward expansion, the Civil War, immigration and civil rights in the formation of the USA as a nation up to 1917. To provide a contrast to what was happening in the USA in the twentieth century, students in the AS year will also study British history between 1945 and 1990, including a consideration of the role of major figures such as Clement Atlee and Margaret Thatcher.
