Public Speaking - Speak Up Workshop

UPDATED 20160104 12:21:41

This course is suitable for all who wish to improve their ability to speak effectively in public, and to convert what may be regarded as an ordeal into an exciting opportunity to express opinions and share ideas. Students must attend the first class to gain the full benefits of the course. If you miss the first day, you will need permission from the tutor to attend the second day. WHAT DOES THIS COURSE COVER ------------------------------------------------------------------ The course will explore the idea that the voice is an expression of an individual's physical and emotional identity. Students will be encouraged to enjoy language, exercising their imagination and creativity to discover a way of speaking which accurately reflects "who they are". In parallel, students will focus upon the technical skills necessary for good voice production, such as controlled breathing and posture, clarity and projection. The first session looks at the experiences of students and aims to re-examine the process of speaking in public from a new perspective. In a relaxed atmosphere, we will look at how our awareness of space may be a key factor in our efforts to take control of sometimes stressful situations in order to get our message across. We will acknowledge the magical power of words to convey meaning and see how we may exploit this creatively. The practical aspects of voice production will be examined through a series of exercises which address common problems and provide a basis for the further development of good vocal technique. The second session will build upon the experience of the first, focusing more closely on individual difficulties, culminating in each student delivering a speech to the class, prepared in advance.
