A2 Economics develops the micro and macroeconomics already learnt at AS, considering economic concepts and theories in greater depth and recognising the values and limitations of economic models. Both A2 modules (Unit 3 and 4) explore two contemporary and relevant contexts: the global context, which includes the impact of globalisation on UK economic performance; and the European Union context, embracing the effect of EU membership and economic policy on the UK economy. Unit 3: Business Economics and the Distribution of Income. Examines how the pricing of and nature of competition between firms is affected by the number and size of market participants. The Unit requires students to understand the operations of the labour market and the factors which influence poverty and the distribution of income and wealth. Unit 4: The National and International Economy. This unit develops the knowledge and skills gained in Unit 2 so that they can be applied in a global context. Additional areas of study include the Quantity Theory of Money, Quantitative Easing, Trade Theory and Exchange Rate Regimes. It is expected that students will acquire a good knowledge of trends and developments in the economy over the past ten years. The assessment of the A2 units places more emphasis upon analysis and evaluation. Both units are synoptic which means that students are expected to be able to apply their knowledge and skills from previous units. Students tend to find the transition from AS to A2 more difficult than from GCSE to AS. There is a strong expectation that students will £read around£ the subject matter from a range of reliable sources.
