The BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences is a vocational course that looks at different areas within the sports sector whilst offering a strong science base. The course provides a solid foundation for students looking to study at higher education whilst also developing essential skills required for gaining employment or progressing onto vocational qualifications. The course in made up of 18 units and looks at a variety of different areas of sport including: Sports physiology and its application Sports psychology and its application Research methods Sports nutrition Sports injuries and massage Principles of training The course is delivered in a practical manner with assessments ranging from written reports, portfolios and posters to verbal assessments, presentations and practical assessment. The course offers a range of trips and team building activities as part of the induction, main course programme and assessments on some units. In the past, trips have included outdoor activities such as paintballing, climbing and canoeing and indoor sports such as laser tag, bowling and ice skating. Students will study towards the Community Sports Leaders Award with the opportunity to progress onto the Higher Sports Leader Award. As a vocational course we encourage students to gain as many additional qualifications as possible to support applications for Higher Education and further job opportunities.
