The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport offers students an opportunity to study sport in the context of the exercise and fitness industry. It is a practical course including a variety of sport-related modules and the chance to gain a range of additional qualifications such as sports coaching and first aid as well as literacy and numeracy. The course is equivalent to 4 GCSEs (A*-C level) and prepares students for employment in the sports sector or progression onto higher level courses. The course is made up of a number of units, each worth 5 or 10 credits. These cover a wide variety of subjects including fitness testing, development of fitness, practical sport, anatomy and physiology, effects of exercise on the body, planning and leading sport activities and injury in sport. In semester two, students can choose an optional unit of either leading outdoor and adventurous activities or technical skills and tactical awareness. A First Aid Qualification is included in the course and a range of additional coaching qualifications are on offer through the Coachsteps programme. Students are able to retake GCSE English or Maths whilst on the course or complete adult literacy / numeracy for those who cannot retake their GCSEs. There are a range of trips and team building activities included throughout the course. Students will also have the opportunity to trial for college academy sports teams.
