Level 2 BTEC Diploma Horse Care

This is a new BTEC course that has replaced the First Diploma Horse Care as a level 2 introductory course in order to fit the new National Qualifications and Credit Framework. The Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care provides practical knowledge and experience combined with academic studies. Stable management and riding skills will be developed within the College yard and students will gain a comprehensive knowledge of horse care. It is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine a practical based training programme with sound theoretical knowledge. This course is ideally suited to student’s who wish to spend a year developing their knowledge and experience working with horses. This course contains plenty of practical and so student’s applying for this course will be expected to be hardworking, keen to learn about horse care and willing to be hands on when working on the stable yard. The Riding option allows students to develop their riding ability and skills. Students on this route will have three riding lessons per week. The Grooming option will develop students’ ability to lunge horses, clip horses, plait and prepare horses for shows. This route is ideal for students who want to work as a groom when they complete their education. Students taking this route will have one riding lesson per week. Myerscough has some of the best teaching and event facilities in the UK. Students completing this one year course will be well prepared for employment in the equine industry. The course is designed to give you a broad understanding of horse care, with a view to progressing to one of our Level 3 Diploma courses, or to start work in the industry. Work experience is an essential part of the course - working in the College's own yard - this will be 1 day per week. Entry requirements

Dark coloured jodhpurs (no patterned jodhpurs), dark coloured College sweatshirt, long boots or jodhpur boots with heel and smooth sole, worn with leather half chaps only. A grooming kit, gloves and an approved standard hat PAS 015 or BSEN 1384. A BSI approved back protector is compulsory for jumping lessons. Wellington or strong boots and overalls for yard work, no trainers and no jeans to be worn on yards. This is not a comprehensive list; please see the equine equipment list.
