Examine the way that separate components work together, and the ways that computers talk to each other. This course gives a real insight into how computers work. Young people aged 16-18. AS LevelComputer Science is about computation and how computers can be used to solve problems. There is a great emphasis on programming using the Visual Basic programming language, and on the development of logical problem-solving techniques. You will learn about the computer as an electronic device looking at logic gates and simple circuits and then at how the processor works. You will study number bases and simple binary arithmetic, investigate the Internet, and learn about some of the protocols used. A2 Level You will complete a project that will involve analysing, designing and coding a system. You will study formal problem-solving techniques in far greater technical and mathematical depth than at AS Level. The programming work carries on from AS Level, but you will learn coding techniques for specific problems as well as methods of evaluating the efficiency of code. The course covers communications and networks, looking at the transmission of data, types of networks and the technologies involved with the Internet and the World Wide Web.
