The AS course combines the study of language and literature. You will have a poetry anthology, rather like the one you may have used at GCSE, but, in the exam, you will have to compare one of these poems with one that you haven't seen before, analysing the language carefully. You are able to take the anthology into the exam with you but can't write any notes on it. You will also read two novels, Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" and Peter Carey's "True History of the Kelly Gang", both written in the last fifty years and very engaging to read. Again, analysing them will involve looking really closely at the language. You will also learn a lot of terminology that will allow you to analyse the writing precisely, showing off your knowledge of grammar (don't worry - we teach it to you!). Finally, you get the opportunity to put the theory into practice by writing yourself. In the coursework, you will produce a folder of 3500 words, including three pieces of writing (such as a short story, a news report and a film review) and a commentary in which you analyse and evaluate your own work.
