You will learn about anatomy and physiology as well as risk assessment and fitness testing. You will also develop your understanding of sports nutrition, psychology for sports performance and the technical demands of sport. 2 year course equivalent to 1 A Level. All units count towards the final grade that is awarded, the Core Units are: Unit 1:PRINCIPLES OF ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY IN SPORT: to understand the structure of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems. Unit 2:THE PHYSIOLOGY OF FITNESS: enables the learner to relate the functions of the skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems to sport and exercise. Unit 3:ASSESSING RISK IN SPORT: how to plan a sports activity safely with the use of risk assessments. Unit 4: FITNESS TRAINING & PROGRAMMING: Looks at the fitness requirements of sports and the different methods of training available; ultimately ending up with designing, monitoring and evaluation a fitness training programme. Unit 7: FITNESS TESTING FOR SPORT & EXERCISE: Conduct fitness tests, practise health screening and analyse the results collected. Unit 11: SPORTS NUTRITION: understand the concepts of nutrition and hydration and their effect on sports performance. Unit 17: PSYCHOLOGY FOR SPORTS PERFORMANCE: understand the effects of personality and motivation on sports performance and also the relationship between stress, anxiety and arousal. Unit 27: TECHNICAL & TACTICAL SKILLS IN SPORT: understand the technical skills and tactical demands of sports. Unit 28: THE ATHLETE’S LIFESTYLE: understand how lifestyle and appropriate behaviour affects the athlete’s performance and their relationship with the media. For the Subsidiary Diploma, students will do core units 1, 2, 3 and 7 plus 3 other optional units. For the Diploma and Extended Diploma students will do all the 9 core units above plus 4 and 10 other units respectively.
