The course will enable you to gain a thorough knowledge of the media industry, media theory and practice whilst simultaneously deepening understanding of the mass media and assess its role as a tool of communication. You will also examine cross-cultural factors and the effects of globalisation by exploring historical, social, political and economic forces which shape the mass media. You will also engage in practical production from a range of platform areas including: broadcasting (film, television, radio production and other audio-visual promotional material), print (newspapers and magazine production) and e-media (web page design). Year 1 modules/topics: Unit MS1 aims to provide a framework for analysing the media and requires exploration of representations and audience/user responses; this includes the role of selection, construction and points of view, messages and values underlying those representations. These include gender, ethnicity, age, issues, events and regional and national identities. Unit MS2 involves practical media production. Year 2 modules/topics: Unit MS3 will require you to produce a media artefact based on a different media platform to that from AS study. For Unit MS4 you will study three different media industries. These will consist of: THE FILM INDUSTRY, ADVERTISING AND MARKETING AND TELEVISION. The unit is designed to develop your understanding of the connections between different media texts, their audiences and the industries which produce and distribute them.
