FM1 Exploring Film Form This unit focuses on the language of film and how a film’s construction can create meaning and emotions for the audience. Understanding will be fostered through: • Studying what we call the micro features of film: mise-en-scène, performance, cinematography, editing and sound; • Identifying how these construct meanings and contribute to the sensory impact of film; • Reflecting on individual response to micro features of film as a means of exploring the relationship between film and spectator; • Creating a film sequence to demonstrate how micro features produce meanings and responses. Assessment • An analysis of a film extract - 1500 words (30 marks) • Creative Project – either a short 3-4 minute short film or a storyboard. FM2: British and American Film This unit focuses on two key aspects of Film Studies: • Producers and audiences of film and the relationship between the two; • The role of macro features in film (narrative, genre and representation). These will be studied in the context of two national cinemas – the UK and the USA. Topics include: • Hollywood as an industry • British horror and comedy films. • American teen films and their history in Hollywood.
