This course replaces the old NVQ2 in Children's Care, Learning & Development and is suitable for learners who have no prior child care experience and also for existing staff members who wish to achieve a formal qualification. Applicants can be in either paid of unpaid employment (min. 12 hours per week). Over the two year period the learner will spend time in the college as well as gaining practical experience in the workplace. In the workplace the learner is expected to work alongside experienced staff to gain skills of child care practice. The learner attends college on a day-release basis and will study towards the City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young Peoples Workforce.

You will attend workshops once a week that provide you with the underpinning knowledge that will aid you in the completion of a portfolio by the end of the programme. The workshops support the skills practiced in the workplace and it is expedted that the workplace mentor and college tutor, together, help you to develop as a childcare practitioner. An assessor will be assigned to you and they will come out to your place of work and assess you in practice.
