What is the course about? The scope for teaching the local history of Hull and district is very wide. For example you can select presentations from a number of Periods, Themes or Topics, Areas or Localities Here are a list of some of the session titles used previously. Periods in Hull’s Development: Medieval 13th to 16th C, Early Modern 16th and 17th C, Georgian later 17th and early 18th C, Victorian and Edwardian c1840-1910, Between the World Wars and after WWII. Areas and Locations: both within and around Hull, including original parishes and villages but also later developments within the town and city. Specific Historical Events: The origins of Hull, The Reformation, The Civil War, The change from the old to the new town, Building the Docks, The Railways, Expanding from the centre to the suburbs, Clearing away the old and building the new. Themes and Topics: Business and Employment-Continuity and Change and the Leaders of Business, Schools and Education, Sport and Leisure, Housing and Neighbourhoods, Parishes and Townships, Transport, Religion. Historical Figures: De La Pole, Wilberforce and others, Reckitt and Ferens, and many others perhaps more briefly or in passing.
