The A level course is comprised of 6 modules of equal weight, three of which are taken during the first year (forming the AS qualification) and another three taken during the second year. In each year, two modules are Core Maths and one is an applied module. Core Maths continues and expands upon the algebra and trigonometry studied at higher level GCSE and introduces a new area of Maths – calculus. Skill in algebra is particularly important as it underpins all other topics. Applied modules may be taken in Mechanics, Statistics or Decision Maths. The Mechanics module covers analysing forces, accelerations, momentum and similar ideas to describe what happens in physical situations. The Statistics module extends the work done at GCSE to cover ways of analysing and displaying numerical data, and of drawing conclusions from this. Probability theory becomes a key tool. The Decision module covers use of algorithms, networks, linear programming and critical path analysis. Students will need to move on from performing calculations accurately and have a clear understanding of what they are doing. There is no coursework at AS/A level.
