An intermediate apprenticeship in barbering, which incorporates delivery of NVQ/Diploma level 2 in barbering, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS), Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and functional skills in English and Mathematics at level 1 if no exemption is applicable. The barbering qualification consists of 7 mandatory units, all of which must be complete; the units include shampooing, conditioning and treating the hair and scalp; advising and consulting with clients, developing and maintaining effectiveness at work, cut men's hair, cut facial hair, dry and finish men's hair and create basic outlines and detailing. In addition to this, learners will choose optional units that add up to a minimum of 9 credits; choices will be made from the following: perming hair, relaxing hair, salon reception duties, plaiting and twisting hair, assist with shaving or colour and lighten men's hair. The most common way to achieve the qualification is that learners will attend the academy for one full day per week for taught sessions, which consist of half a day theory input, to prepare for on-line tests and half a day practical activities, either preparing for or carrying out practical assessment activities. As the course progresses, practical takes place in a realistic working environment with paying clients; when all the required knowledge tests are complete, it is common that learners may spend the full session working on practical tasks and assessments. In addition to this, learners are expected to undergo practice and training in the salon environment under the supervision of a senior member of staff who is qualified to a suitable level; this is led by staff from the academy, who discuss and set completion targets at review. On completion of this qualification a suitable progression route could be to study for an Advanced Apprenticeship in hairdressing or Barbering.
