NSCD’s Foundation Course is recognised nationally for laying the foundations for further in-depth professional training. It provides an insight into the three year full-time vocational dance training within a conservatoire setting. On average, over 80% of foundation students are successful in gaining places at Higher Education Institutions, with approximately 60% of students gaining places on vocational dance training at NSCD or elsewhere. In November 2014 NSCD received an Outstanding rating from OFSTED for the course. This full-time one-year course includes Contemporary, Ballet and Supplementary technique training and a range of creative and performance workshops. Performance opportunities take place during the second and third terms offering students the experience of performing in a Community Dance project in local schools and in a final showcase at NSCD’s Riley Theatre. Students also study dance history and develop research and study skills. Former students have continued their dance training at NSCD, London Contemporary Dance School, Trinity Laban, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, London Studio Centre and at a number of universities offering dance degrees. Students selected for the Foundation Course come from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities.
