Hairdressing and Beauty The Hairdressing and Beauty industry offers many excellent learning opportunities and a diverse range of employment options. Many workers are self-employed. Jobs are available in salons of various sizes within department stores, hotels and cruise liners. It may even be possible to diversify into work within the theatre, photography or even television or working for the manufacturers of products associated with the industry. The client’s relationship with their hairdresser is a special one and anyone entering this line of work will need a friendly, confident manner, a tactful approach and the ability to provide a listening ear. For those who succeed this area offers a flexible and highly rewarding career. Initial job roles will generally involve general client care and keeping the salon clean & tidy. After time the work will move on to colouring, cutting and perming and may also include the supervision of junior staff. You may decide that a barbering programme is more appropriate for you as these programmes are aimed at people intending to work, or already working, in barbers' shops or men's hairdressing salons. It emphasises the underlying principles and the practical skills required of barbers or men's hairdressers as men become as style conscious as women, the demand for male grooming services is on the rise. Skilled barbers who can cut and style hair and trim beards are in demand all over the UK. Learners on barbering programmes will learn to give individual consultations and how to cut, trim, shape and shave facial hair. They will also give scalp massages, colour hair and have a good understanding of hygiene.
