This NVQ is now a benchmark qualification in health and social care. It is in line with a large number of initiatives and codes of practice, including national service standards in social care and the Agenda for Change in the NHS. Offering a flexible and wide range of optional units this NVQ has been designed to address the increasing number of new job roles, new types of services and settings, joint working arrangements and the need to continually update and extend skills. The flexibility of the qualification structure builds on the induction framework and greatly assists achievability and relevance for the Health and Social Care sectors. Building on induction frameworks the qualification is designed to offer clearer opportunities and incentives for progression and further development whilst establishing workers' initial competence to practise safely. At Level 2 the qualification is designed for care workers who support and assist individuals with their physical or emotional care, daily living needs or maintaining independence, usually working under supervision. It is particularly relevant for home care assistants, community support assistands and residential or day care assistants. If undertaken as an NVQ only (such as through Train to Gain) then the approximate duration is 9 months. If undertaken as part of an apprenticeship the approximate duration is 14months.
