Classical Civilisation is the study of Greek & Roman society, history, culture and religion, through the literature, buildings and sculptures which they produced. On the first year of the course we study Homer’s epic poem, the Odyssey, exploring mythology but also real-life Bronze Age society. We also study the Roman class-system through the eyes of four different Roman writers, looking at daily life and the influence of Stoic and Epicurean philosophy on Roman attitudes to slavery & freedom. In the second year we explore changing ideas of heroism in the ancient world, by comparing Homer’s Iliad with Virgil’s Aeneid, so by the time you finish the course you will have read the three major pieces of literature written in the ancient world. You will also become an expert on Greek art and architecture, including the mythology that forms the subject of most ancient art. Our students enjoy Classics so much that every year between 40-50% of them choose to study Classics or a related subject (Archaeology, Art History, Anthropology) at university. Since 2001, 21 of our students have progressed to Oxford to study Classics & Ancient History. Many of our former students are now employed as museum curators, Classics teachers, journalists, publishers, archaeologists and diplomats.
