Ancient History involves the study of two great civilisations, ancient Greece and ancient Rome, based on texts written by ancient authors, as well as archaeological evidence like coins, inscriptions, statues and buildings. On the first year of the course we study the rise and fall of Sparta, and the extent to which Sparta’s’ success depended on her unique social structure. We also explore how Augustus became the first emperor of Rome, after winning the Battle of Actium, and how he held onto supreme power. In the second year we study the 1st & 2nd Peloponnesian Wars, a sixty-year period of conflict between the two superpowers of Athens and Sparta, and the political comedies written by Aristophanes to entertain and inform Athenian audiences during this period. This course will not just teach you about Ancient History: it will teach you to write well-argued and interesting essays, show you how to evaluate the reliability of evidence and inspire you to form your own ideas on how an ideal society should be organised.
