Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing

An advanced apprenticeship in hairdressing, which incorporates delivery of NVQ/Diploma level 3 in hairdressing, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS), Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and functional skills at level 2 in English and Mathematics if no exemption is applicable. The hairdressing qualification consists of 4 mandatory units, all of which must be complete; the units include creatively styling and dressing hair; creatively cutting hair; creatively colouring and lightening hair and providing client consultation services. In addition to this, learners will choose optional units that add up to a minimum of 25 credits; choices will be made from the following: perming , relaxing, reception duties, colour correction, creative hair extensions, cutting men's hair, contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business, develop, enhance and evaluate creative hairdressing skills, contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities. Commonly, learners attend the academy one day per week for taught sessions, which consist of half a day theory input and half a day practical activities, that take place in a realistic working environment on paying clients. In addition to this, learners are expected to undergo practice and training in the salon environment under the supervision of a senior member of staff who is qualified to a suitable level; this is led by staff from the academy, who discuss and set completion targets at review. On completion of this qualification, full stylist status is achieved, enabling achievers to progress into a stylist role in a hairdressing salon. Anyone interested in a further progression route may be suitable for study for an assessor qualification.
