Precision Machining Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3 (EAL)

A precision machining apprentice will learn basic machining and hand fitting. This type of work will also include marking out work pieces accurately using a range of equipment. As a part of their training programme a precision machining apprentice will manufacture a set of tools; this will include items such as an engineer’s square, toolmakers vice, tap wrench and many more. The apprentices will attend a variety of lectures to provide them with basic underpinning knowledge and understanding of the tools, materials, manufacturing equipment and processes they will be using and following throughout their career. Apprentices will work on a variety of machines within the academy, to include: Centre Lathes Vertical and horizontal milling machines Surface grinders Pillar drills Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) lathes Once on site the apprentices will then progress by completing additional advanced machining tasks, which involve more complex work holding and machining skills. Precision machinists will also be placed for a short time in the drawing office to learn the basics of a programme called UniGraphics, and complete various engineering drawings to required standards. This course includes project driven assignments focused on practical and theoretical components for the safe and proper use of: machine tools such as lathe, horizontal and vertical mills, Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) . All practical training is completed in the AWE apprentice Academy and via work placements within our business. Qualifications gained are NVQ3 mechanical manufacturing engineering National certificate (as appropriate) Functional skills at level 2
