They will also learn the basic skills required such as using hand tools to terminate various cables. Once all of this knowledge is absorbed the apprentices then move into the electrical workshop where they begin manufacturing wiring support systems, installing electrical circuits and maintaining in various environments. Typical jobs within the workshop include: Bending and threading conduit Forming PVC conduit Making bends in cable trunking and cable tray Learning the different types of cable sizes and their purposes Understanding of associated rules and regulations During the first 1.5 years of the apprenticeship the apprentices must complete PEO units, which involve planning, designing, installing and maintaining electrical circuits. A variety of lectures will also be provided to the apprentices covering the following subjects: Cable calculations Earthing and bonding Electrical Maintenance Three phase supplies Transformers Motors Electrical Regulations Electrical theory and calculations On completion of the level 2 NVQ units apprentices are ready for on-site placements where they will be getting involved with more complex electrical maintenance activities.
