You are interested in how society functions and how individuals are socialised to fit into expected norms. For many students sociology supports progression into a degree in sociology or a related discipline in the humanities. We are all members of rapidly changing societies and our lives are affected by the rules, values and institutions of society. You will study different ways of understanding societies and social change. You’ll study families and households including the nature and extent of changes in the structure of families and patterns of marriage. In studying education, you will explore its role and impact along with differences in achievement between social groups. A critical understanding of the methods used by sociologists will also be taught. Later on a further range of topics will be studied. These include systems of belief, explanations of crime and deviance and the study of suicide. A more in-depth investigation of theoretical, practical and ethical considerations influencing sociological research will also be considered. A wide variety of teaching methods and learning experiences will give you the ability to look beyond taken for granted explanations. You’ll find that a lively interest in current affairs and the ability to discuss competing theories is central to the learning process.
