Psychology GCE AS Level

UPDATED 20160210 11:53:03

We are all amateur psychologists, constantly trying to explain behaviour we see around us. You will be fascinated by this and want to develop a more informed and scientific approach. Students often go on to study psychology at university. Others use the A level to support progression to a broad range of university degrees. You’ll be introduced to psychological approaches to research and carry out small investigations. You will identify the strengths and weaknesses of the measurements you have collected. You will also study several important pieces of psychological research in detail, for example: the effect of leading questions on eye witnesses’ memory of car accidents; the case study of a small boy with a phobia of horses; why under certain circumstances we obey orders to harm another person; and whether children will imitate aggressive acts that they see. In Forensic Psychology, you will see how psychologists have studied police work and helped to improve the interviewing of eye witnesses. In Clinical Psychology, you will study the effectiveness of treatments of depression. You will work both in small groups and independently. To study psychology at A level you need to have gained a grade C or better in GCSE English and a grade C or better in either GCSE Mathematics or GCSE Additional Science.
