You enjoy music, play at least one instrument and can read music fluently in treble and bass clefs. You’re willing to learn and are interested in music of all styles, including classical. Students often continue their music studies at university. For others music plays a central part in their life while they pursue other academic interests. A level music continues along the lines of GCSE music with its three elements of listening, composing and performing. You will develop your skills as a musical performer and will record your solo performance. You will develop your composition skills and compose pieces yourself in response to a given brief. You’ll write a sleeve note to describe aspects of your composition and how other pieces of music have influenced it. You’ll listen to pieces of music to understand how they work. You will study set compositions and harmonise a melody in a given style and analyse a score of unfamiliar music by answering questions on keys, chords, cadences, modulations and non-harmonic notes. You will have the opportunity to study music theory if you do not already have a sufficient grade. You should continue with instrumental music lessons and these can often be arranged through college. You’ll also study elements of music technology and have the opportunity to gain an appropriate qualification. As well as theory and developing analytical composing and technical skills, lessons will obviously involve listening to and making music.
