You’ll be interested in a broad range of contemporary issues and wish to gain understanding across a broad range of the arts, humanities and sciences. You’ll be interested in the process of argument and debate. Students of General Studies can progress to the whole range of university degrees and employment opportunities available. The skills learned in understanding and balancing both sides of an argument are transferable and highly valued in all disciplines. The course deals with the major themes of conflict and space, power and change. The themes will be tackled through five areas of study: science and technology; society and politics; arts and media; business and industry; beliefs and values. In the theme of conflict, for example, we consider issues such as sports and games as a channel for aggression, the role of advertising, the factors that divide society and whether technology causes as many problems as it solves. You will look at both sides of issues and learn to present a balanced argument and express your ideas clearly and logically. These skills reinforce and complement your specialist studies in other subject areas. To study General Studies at this level there are no subject specific requirements.
