You enjoy reading, like arguing about what things mean and love exploring the ways those meanings are made. You have an interest in contemporary and pre-twentieth century prose, poetry and drama. You want to study a subject that engages your feelings as well as your mind. English literature students are highly respected by prestigious universities and the skills of analysis and expression that you develop on the course can lead to a wide range of university courses and careers. You will discuss and study texts such as Brian Friel’s play Dancing at Lughnasa, the poetry of Eavan Boland and Clare Pollard, F.Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby (as played by Leonardo di Caprio in the recent film) and D.H. Lawrence’s novella The Virgin and the Gipsy. You will also produce your own creative writing, inspired by your independent reading of a prose text. Later on, you will study pre-twentieth century texts and a Shakespeare play. You will develop as an independent reader and as a critical/creative writer, exploring comparisons and connections between texts, considering other readers’ interpretations and appreciating the contexts in which texts were written.
