Physics AS Level / A2 level

UPDATED 20150610 13:16:58

Physics has been called the most fundamental of all sciences, and its scope is immense, ranging from the infinitesimally small - for instance particles within atomic nuclei - to the massive and vast - for example galaxies in space - and everything in between. It is a science which develops theories and uses models to make predictions of real world behaviour. Our aim is to offer AS and A2 courses in Physics which are suitable for progression to Higher Education or to vocational work. You will follow the AQA Modular Physics (A) syllabus which requires the study of three units for AS and a further three for A2 level. The course is arranged so that the AS units are studied in Year 1 and the A2 units in Year 2. Year 1 (AS Level) You will cover the three units outlined below. These units build on key skills and ideas introduced at GCSE level and incorporate some new ideas relating to modern Physics. •Unit 1: Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity: Matter and Radiation, Quarks and Leptons, Quantum Phenomena, Electric Currents, DC and AC Electricity. •Unit 2: Mechanics, Materials and Waves: Forces, Motion, Work and Energy, Materials, Waves. •Unit 3: Investigative and Practical Skills: AQA set tasks are taken under controlled conditions and centre-marked and then moderated. Year 2 (A Level) You will cover the three units outlined below. These more advanced units build on AS studies as well as introducing new concepts. •Unit 4: Fields and Further Mechanics: Force and Momentum, Circular Motion, Simple Harmonic Motion, Gravitational and Electric Fields. •Unit 5: Nuclear Physics, Thermal Physics and Turning Points in Physics: Radioactivity, Nuclear Energy, Thermal Physics, Gas Laws, Turning Points in Physics. •Unit 6: Investigative and Practical Skills: AQA set tasks are taken under controlled conditions and centre-marked and then moderated.
