The aims of the course are to deepen your enjoyment and appreciation of literature and to develop your written English skills so that you have the best opportunity of gaining a widely respected national qualification. AS and A Level English Literature will help you to develop your reading and writing skills. You will develop your ability to analyse and interpret literary texts and you will learn how to structure written arguments. We follow AQA Specification B which comprises four units, two for AS and a further two for A Level. Year 1 • In your AS year you will cover two units. Unit 1: Aspects of Narrative introduces you to the importance of narrative and the ways in which literary texts work. You will be focusing on how narratives are constructed by authors and the different ways in which they can be responded to by readers. There are four texts for study for this unit, two novels and two poetry texts. This unit will be assessed by examination at the end of the academic year. The examination is two hours long (open book). Unit 2: Dramatic Genres is a course work unit. The aim of this unit is to introduce you to the different genres of plays, for example, tragedy or comedy. Year 2 • In the A Level year you will cover two units. Unit 3: Texts and Genres develops your understanding of genre. You will study three texts and the focus will be Gothic literature. This unit will be assessed by examination at the end of the academic year. The examination is two hours long (closed book). Unit 4: Further and Independent Reading is a course work unit. You will complete two pieces of work for this unit, one piece will focus on an anthology and the other will be a comparative essay on two texts.
