The AQA Chemistry syllabus is undertaken over 2 years. This requires the study of 3 units for AS and a further 3 for A Level. The course is arranged so that the modules you study in Year 1 are those required for AS, to which in Year 2 you can add those needed for A Level. The modules are as follows: Year 1 (AS) • Unit 1 - CHEM1 - Foundation Chemistry: a development from GCSE studies, with greater emphasis on quantitative (moles) work. Topics include atoms and reactions, electrons, bonding and structure and the periodic table. In addition to this, students are introduced to organic chemistry and alkanes. • Unit 2 - CHEM2 - Chemistry in Action: this module allows students to apply knowledge from unit 1 to rates of reaction, energetics, enthalpy, redox reactions, group 7 and group 2 elements and metal extraction. Organic chemistry is investigated in more detail through reactions of haloalkanes, alkenes and alcohols. Analysis of substances is met for the first time. • Unit 3 - Internal Assessment - Investigative and Practical Skills: Experimental skills will be developed and examined by teacher assessed practicals through practical and investigative skills assessments Year 2 (A Level) • Unit 4 - CHEM4 - Kinetics, Equilibria and Organic Chemistry: The unit builds on the chemical concepts from the AS course and includes rates of reaction, chemical equilibria and pH of acids, bases and buffers. The aspects of organic chemistry in this module include naming of organic compounds, reactions of aliphatic and aromatic compounds, polymers, amino acids plus synthesis and further analysis of organic structures. • Unit 5 - CHEM5 - Energetics, Redox and Inorganic Chemistry: The unit again builds on the chemical concepts of the AS course and includes thermodynamics, electrochemical cells, periodicity, redox chemistry, inorganic reactions and transition elements. • Unit 6 - Internal Assessment - Investigative and Practical Skills:
